A Drive to Daro : I Have Another Dream

Past

1980年代前，从泗里街市Sarikei到玛都镇Matu可要花一天的时间。首先，在Sarikei搭一个小时半的快艇到达佬镇Daro, 然后Daro从乘约一小时的小舟到Matu。Sarikei快艇还有按时间表出发，每人船费约RM18; Daro小舟则需包整只船。等等停停，全程需半天。

1990年代，Daro到Matu通车了。路虽小，可方便多了。同时木胶Mukah晋升为省，Daro、Matu割入Mukah省，三镇从此通车。然而，Daro、Matu也开始经济衰退。

2000年代，自Daro、Matu通车后，Matu一带居民都到Daro办货，Matu生意一落千丈。年轻一代更到外求生，留在Matu镇的人家不到5 户。河上运输更是步入夕阳。

2010年代，Daro直接通车到诗巫Sibu市，同时也通往丹端马尼Tanjung Manis、Sarikei。不过从Sarikei到Matu车程需约三小时，且须过3 渡轮。

Present

那天，咱们5人八时半从Sarikei出发。由破浪的6307道直往民丹莪Bintangor，然后转右入丘陵的6102道，再入破浪的6308A直往Paradom。
在Paradom 路口转左，还RM5塔渡轮过拉让江Batang Rajang 到Igan，再转左入3104道驾驶约一小时往Tanjung Manis。经2大桥后达路口，左往Tanjung Manis,右往Daro。
转右后不久到达Batang Paloh河蚌，塔渡轮过河到Pulau Bruit。一路经过无数马来村后达 Batang Lassa河蚌。因河口宽阔、河水涌急、偶尔又遇浪，渡轮每来回一次需约一小时。
过了Batang Lassa 就离Daro不远了，可是到达时也已十二时半了。
全程共四小时，耗RM25车油、RM7渡轮费（全程以粗红线画）。相比塔船一小时、RM18船费，5人乘车费用虽便宜，却耗时费神。

Future

不过，若以蓝线沿Muara Payang建路接Tanjung Manis路口，相信从 Sarikei到 Daro的车程可以减至一小时。
往Tanjung Manis再造一条直通路，不但带动Sarikei经济，制造就业机会，也减少运输费，又不碍Pulau Bruit和Igan的发展。为国为民，有益无害，何乐不为？

It was 23^rd December, 2012 ( Chinese Winter Solstice 冬至 ) , about 12midnight, when I was driving at 90km/hr at Jalan Kinabalu, near Wisma Tun Sambathan, approaching the traffic light at Bulatan Merdeka junction. The green light is blinking, so I decided to go ahead. As soon as I drove pass the traffic light, it turned orange. It was then, I spotted trough my back mirror a bright flash behind me. I thought someone highlighted me, but the flash was quite different. It was more like a high-powered-camera-flash.

Less than 24 hour after that, on 24^th December, 2012, at 5.03pm, as I was driving out of Bandar Puteri Klang into KESAS highway toward KL, I saw a Erythrina glauca tree fell at Ramp B of Puteri Interchange. So I called Sathya to ask him to bring some worker to re-erect the tree. Langkah kiri I guess. A traffic police patrol car so happened trailed me from behind, and the police officers saw me dialing my hp. I decided not to bribe, so they saman me lo !

So, I decided to check for traffic summons. So I googled for

Broga Hill's Grasses

Poaceae ( previously known as Gramineae ) is one of the largest plant families known to man. A handful of the member of the Poaceae family were domesticated and cultivated in factory-farms for their seeds for human consumption.

Except for some species enslaved as food crop, grasses at many other places are liberated hippies, often regarded as nuisance unproductive weeds.

But at the top of Broga Hill, the they are royals. Visitors are attracted to the hill for reason non-other than the picturesque landscape of grass dominated high land.

Pennisetum polystachyon and Imperata cylindrica dominate the hill, with some broadleaves struggling to survive.

Here in Broga Hill, Pennisetum polystachyon is the King. Tall and vigor, gentle yet strong. While the Queen Imperata cylindrica. Elegant, strong willed, dancing gracefully in the wind.

Seasons come and go.

Rainy and draught seasons… sunrises and sunsets…even mid-days and mid-nights …
The grasses grow and die, re-grow and die…

Crowd streaming in and out.

Family and friends…elders and youngsters…love birds and litter bugs alike…

The grasses open-heartedly welcome all.

Malaysia Day

Federation of Malaya ( Persekutuan Tanah Melayu ) is the name given to a federation of 11 states that existed from 31^st January 1948 until 16^th September 1963.

The Federation gained independence from the British on 31^st August 1957.

( However, some historians, including Prof Emerintus Khoo Koy Kim thinks that the Malay states were never colonized by the British. The British was merely interfered in the administration of the States.

31^st August 1957 was a transformation of government from monarchy to constitutional federation. )

( so, technically, there is no Independence Day for Federation of Malaya )

It was reconstituted as Malaysia with addition of Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak in 1963. However, entry of Sabah and Sarawak into the Federation was on different terms and conditions from the states of Peninsular Malaysia.

( United States of America is a different case. Today’s U.S.A. is a federal union of 50 states. But, the original 13 colonies, then 13 states, declared their independence in the American Revolution and formed the Unites States of America. U.S.A. grew as other states joined in the union. )

A Commission of Enquiry was commissioned, headed by Lord Cobbold, to study the desire of the people of the then North Borneo and Sarawak in joining Malaya in the proposed Federation of Malaysia. The Commission on 1^st August 1962 recommended that the formation of Malaysia should be implemented.

Sarawak, then was an independent state, granted independence by the British on 22^nd July 1963. As a newly born country, Sarawak was still weak and naïve. The leaders were eager

only to protect their interests, and the people are too short-sighted to foresee consequences of joining the Federation of Malaysia.

Sabah was a British Crown Colony, known as North Borneo. North Borneo was granted self-governance on 31^st August 1963.

Brunei boldly rejected the proposal.

Singapore, gained independence from British on 31^st August 1963, before joining the new Federation of Malaysia in September along with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak.

Thus, on 16^th September 1963, born a new nation named Malaysia. The states of the Federation was Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Singapore and Terengganu.

( so, constitutionally, Malaysia Day is 16^th September 1963 )

Later, Singapore separated from Malaysia in 9^th August 1965. It was condemned by other States, but history proved that the decision was wise after all.
( 14 states minus 1. Malaysia now stands with 13 states )

Although the Constitution of the Federation of Malaysia was copied from the Constitution of the Federation of Malaya, large scale of amendments were made. It is now known as Constitution of Malaysia. ( not Malaya )

So, who is re-writing our history ?
( Politicians, please shut up. Lets hear from the historians )

The Fallen Jalur Gemilang

Our beloved PM called on all Malaysian to fly our national flag – Jalur Gemilang ( Stripes of Glory ), in conjunction with Malaya’s 54^th Independence Day ( Federation of Malaya gained independence from British on 31^st August 1957. Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore then get together on 16^th September 1963, to form Malaysia. Thus Malaysia celebrate her 48^th anniversary this year ).

Patriotism

The Flag should be allowed to fly freely

Every year, our leaders call us to fly the Jalur Gemilang. It’s a symbol of unity, they said. It’s a symbol of patriotism too ! Some years back, some political figures accused the Chinese community of being un-patriotic for not flying the national flag.

Yes Sir, I noticed that you fly the flag at your multi-million castles and mansions, also on your expensive cars.

Yes Sir, patriotism for you is to manipulate the Police, Judges, Anti-Corruption Agency, and even the Election Commission for your personal gain. Oh sorry Sir ! That was not you. It sounds like you, looks like you, but its not you.

Yes Sir, patriotism for you is to steal our RMAF’s jet engines, logs in the forest reserves, collection from advertising licenses, non-submersible submarines, and all other public coffers. Again, my apology Sir. That couldn’t be you Sir, for you are a faithful public servant.

Yes Sir, patriotism is for you to serve your political masters, by sacrifice the people. Power and money are the reasons for your involvement in politics. No Sir, it was not you. You are an elected representative of the people. You won’t betray your constituent’s thrust.

Fly or Fry

Some Local Government threatened the business owners not to renew their business registration license for not flying Jalur Gemilang at their business premises.

Sir, is your flag-selling business not doing well ? I am glad that your patriotism leads you into flag-selling business, but it seems like a bad business decision.

Yes Sir, we are mere little fry on hot pan... being held ransom for our rights and privileges. We were grab by the throat for the ever-rising water, power and fuel bill, extravagant price of imported cars & IT gadgets, inflating cost of essential foodstuff, skyrocketed un-affordable homes, and even books !

Yes Sir, we are small fry, fly only via low cost airlines, from low cost terminals, to low cost destinations, with low budget ; … while you Sir, fly first class with your entourage around the world visiting toilets and Disneyland.

Now everyone kena fry, indeed !

Mutilated Flags

Respect our Jalur Gemilang, we were told.

Malaysian are self-proclaimed well-manner people. We respect each other. We respect our national flag too. But respect has a different meaning in our context.

The standard size of Jalur Gemilang is 14’ height x 28’ width ( click here ). But it seems that nobody cares. Everyone have their own versions. Some like it to be the biggest in the world. Some want it to be longest.

While some like to make if of refused material, others like to make it into cakes and eat it on Merdeka Day celebration.

Jalur Gemilang has different designs and sizes in the country. Different materials, different flavours too !

While the politicians encourages the people to fly it on their cars and motorcycles, they don’t care if the flags were strongly cling to the vehicles. After a whole month of fly-our-flag-campaign, the whole country starts another campaign : collect-and-dispose the fallen flags. What an insult !

While our government agencies twisted and turned the flag, altered the design, tailcoat-cut it, and hang it under hot sun, cool moon, wind and rain. Magnificent, is it not ?!

Eeee… is it considered against the law, or disrespect to the national flag ?

Well, happy 48^th anniversary, Malaysia !

Traffic Light : Instruction or Advise ?

Traffic lights are signaling devices positioned at road intersections, pedestrian crossing and other locations to control competing flows of traffics. They assign the right-of-way to road users by the use of lights in standard colours : Red, Yellow, Green.

Virtually, all jurisdictions in which traffic lights are used, it is NOT necessary an offence for motorist and other road users to disregard the instruction of traffic lights.

Some jurisdictions are very strict in enforcing the rules of traffic light.

Sometime when a police officer is controlling the traffic, the traffic is jammed even more !

Sometimes we tends to wander if the traffic lights are easing the traffic or worsening it.

Sometimes, when a traffic light fails to function properly/poorly, are we still bound to its instruction ?

Can we, ( the maker of traffic lights ) make more sensible decision than the traffic lights ?

Pedestrians :

· Pedestrians can cross against a Red light, when traffic is clear. Y/N ?

· Pedestrians can cross against a Red light, even when traffic is halted. Y/N ?

Red :

· Turn left ( in the left-driving jurisdictions ) or right ( in the right-driving jurisdictions ), when traffic is clear. Y/N ?

· Proceed cautiously at pedestrian crossing even if there are no pedestrians. Y/N ?

· Proceed with alert at an intersection when there are no other vehicles from competing lanes ( presently Green-lane ). Y/N ?

· Stop on Red, even if a police officer controlling the traffic. Y/N ?

· Can Ambulance/Police Car/Fire Engine beat a red light. Y/N ?

Yellow :

· Running an Yellow light. Y/N ?

· Stop on Yellow light. Y/N ?

Green :

· BLOCK THE BOX . A vehicle stubbornly entering an intersection ( even if on a Green light ), but in unable to proceed and gets stranded in the intersection ( as the traffic ahead fails to proceed ), and remains in the intersection after the light turns Red, resulting in blocking other vehicles from other lanes. Y/N ?
· Stop to give way for emergency vehicles. Y/N ?

Who shall make the final call ?

发展究竟是什么？

发展不是只有老人留在镇里守着老家、闲田。发展是一家能整整齐齐、安居乐业。

发展不是佳节期间，镇里一时车水马龙。发展是百家齐放、兴旺昌盛，即使不是过年大节。

发展不是年年华小闹师荒。发展是大学录取只看成绩。

发展不是矿建住宿学校而学生不学无术。发展是学子不必离乡背景到外地深造、更不担心毕业后回乡失业。

发展不是拿了几亩地种油棕，多年以后一家几口无奈地守着那几亩地过活。发展是不把稻田建成商场，然后向外国入口白米。

发展不是抽空油田、伐完森林，肥了恶人。发展是国富民强。

发展不是花了巨款建了大医院，却发了霉！发展不是医院没有医生。

发展不是马路廿年来一样窄、一样弯。发展不是廉价机场和富都车站一样乱、一样脏。

发展不是到政府部门，还要看脸色、送礼。发展是公务员不当土霸王。

发展不是贪官当道。发展是官者清廉、正义伸张。

发展不是有国才有家。发展是有家才有国。

1、短信听不到语气，电话看不到表情。
其实我没生气，你当真了；我在笑呢，你看不到吧；我哭了呢，抱着手机哭倦了睡过又醒了，你在忙吗？

2、共同语言如果两个人在一起，两个人的交往圈会融为共同的圈子，话题永远都在更新。
而不在一起的两个人，对彼此身边的环境都会因陌生而逐渐失去兴趣，慢慢的，能说的话只有空洞的‘我想你’。
我在努力找话题呢，不要回信说‘哦、嗯、好’了好吗？

3、不安全感
看了10次手机了，你还是没有回信。你在哪、和谁、在干什么？
刚刚拒绝了别人的好意，却禁不住想，你身边的莺莺燕燕，一如我身边的花花草草吗？

4、远水不救近火
我这里下雨了，来送伞的是同学的弟弟；我吃饭忘带钱了，来解围的是朋友的朋友。
原来你不吭声是因为你生病了，可我再担忧，也不能在你身边端一杯水…

5、距离产生幻觉
其实我有些小虚荣，照片有时候修掉了眼袋才给你看；其实你有些小自负，认定了的事情就以为自己一定对。
为了大老远的爱你，我拒绝接受身边一切说你不好的言论，什么都往好的方向想。你也是吧？
其实我们都不是对方想象的那样好……

6、距离产生误会
我兴冲冲地发短信给你讲刚刚的趣事，你隔了半天说‘噢’，我不知道你在忙的嘛，所以我生闷气了。
你给我发了八条短信两个电话我也没回，愤怒得嗷嗷直叫，我在做上课呢，手机调振动了的嘛。
其实我们都知道对方不是故意的，但情绪来了，总需要宣泄的。

7、善意的谎言
我碰巧和相熟的男生去看电影了，想了想，对你说和女生去的。
你独自去了我们约好要一起去的地方，犹豫再三，对我说你哪都没去。
不愿让对方多想，却因为偶尔的疏忽，让对方想得更多。

8、寂寞
一个人不寂寞，想念一个人才寂寞。
你说，来，抱抱。于是我把自己裹在被窝里，闭上眼，恩，抱抱。
一个人站在夜空下时，你会抬头看月亮吗？

9、信念坍塌
我看到身边一对一对的，男生帮女生打开水送饭，在宿舍楼下卿卿我我，周末还能一起爬山，没忍住就对在地图对角线上的你发牢骚，其实是想听你的鼓励，想听听你的安慰，你的一个电话就能让我安心。
可也许刚刚好你接到朋友异地恋分手倾诉的电话，那么容易就把自己带入了戏，无心的抱怨雪上加霜。
有时候折腾一下，只为了证明自己的重要性。
哪知脆弱基础上的高楼只须多压上一根头发的重量，也许就崩溃了。

10、你的真心
人心隔肚皮，更何况我们还隔着千山万水。
男生永远无法理解女生为什么需要浓浓的表达爱意，正如我永远不知道你为何可以那样轻轻的表明心意。

Blowin' in the Wind

Blowin' in the Wind" is a song written by Bob Dylan and released on his 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Although it has been described as a protest song, it poses a series of questions about peace, war, and freedom. The refrain "The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind" has been described as "impenetrably ambiguous: either the answer is so obvious it is right in your face, or the answer is as intangible as the wind".

In 1999, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004, it was ranked #14 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

The first line of the song ("How many roads must a man walk down?") is proposed as the "Ultimate Question", in the science fiction novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It is also likely that this line was an allusion to Big Bill Broonzy's song, "When Will I Get to be Called a Man?"

In the movie Forrest Gump, Jenny sings this song for a show in a strip club, and is introduced as "Bobby Dylan". The film's soundtrack album features Joan Baez's 1976 live recording of the song, from her From Every Stage album. This scene is lampshaded by Internet comedian Noah Antwiler in his review of Final Fantasy X, saying that the main character Tidus is, believe it or not, a man, but similar to how Bob Dylan is played by a woman in the movies.

In1975, the song was included as poetry in a new high school Englis textbook in Sri Lanka. The textbook caused controversy because it replaced Shakespeare's work with Dylan's.

登山

踏上登山之路，始于茅草山。屈指一算，大概是一年前的事了… ….

许多人登山，越登越高、征服了一座又一座，视世界最高峰珠穆朗玛峰为极终目标。我就是少了那份野心和大志，来来去去就是那几座小丘。

到了寡妇山两次，只在山脚流览，就是没有兴趣耗钱折磨自己登上东南亚的最高峰。人的耐力、毅力就如此衡量的吗？大地是如此征服的吗？

登山，其实不必那么复杂。什么成就感、山征服了又如何……都跟我扯不上关系。更不来负离子这一套！

简简单单的登山，并不在乎山有多高、或还需要多少时间，而要不慌不忙、走走停停，才能享受登山的乐趣，才不会错过美丽的风景。

古早味之姓氏桥 Penang's Clan Jetties

到槟城的姓氏桥，不禁百感交加。浓浓的乡音、熟悉的水上人家、海风的味道，仿佛回到儿时阿嘛的家。

姓氏橋位于檳城渡輪碼頭不遠處，是華人抵達檳城最早的聚落。

房屋都搭蓋在海上，底部用桩柱支撐，並用木板鋪設成橋樑作為村里的街道，是馬來西亞一處典型的水上人家聚落。

早期，聚落的住戶都按姓氏區分勢力範圍各自組成社區幫會，因此而形成今日的姓林桥、姓周桥、姓陈桥、姓李桥、姓杨桥、杂姓桥及平安桥。当中以姓周桥规模最大，水上人家约60户。姓王桥已人去桥空，遗址已变成停车场。

村民的祖籍以福建同安县居多，老一辈村民则一般以捕鱼为生。

雖說是早年的移民落腳站，今日仍有許多人居住在那兒。

Flag of Our Fathers

The huge bronze figures of soldiers were designed by Felix de Weldon, who also did Washington’s Marine Corps War Memorial ( also known as Iwo Jima Monument ).

It was to commemorate some 11,000 people died during the 12-years Malayan Emergency.

This original national monument is a cenotaph set up by the British to commemorate the wars and honour the fallen heroes from WW I, WW II and the Malayan Emergency.

Klang Gate Quartz Ridge

Klang Gates Quartz Ridge is said to be the longest quartz ridge in the whole world.

It is also home to 5 endemic plant species :

Skybridge of Twin Towers

Petronas Twin Towers of 451.9m was once the tallest building in the world ( 1998 – 2004 ), before being surpassed by Taipei 101.

The skybridge connecting the two towers at level 41 & 42, however, is still the highest 2-tier skybridge ever. It is 170m above ground level.

Visitors are allowed for a short visit ( about 15 minutes only ), but only with Visitor Pass which come along with a ticket. Tickets are free, but one had to queue for the ticket as early as 6am, as tickets are limited.

However, effective from 1^st October 2010, visitors to Petronas Twin Towers’s Skybridge shall be charged RM3 for Malaysian citizens and RM10 for foreigners. Still, despite being charged, visitors are not allowed to pre-book, online book, pre-purchase or what ever means to avoid queuing.

Gemas 金马士 is a small town in the district of Tampin, of Negeri Sembilan. It is located by the border of Negeri Sembilan-Johor, divided by Sg. Gemas. The Johor side of the town is known as Gemas Bahru 大港.

A long time ago, Gemas was originally known as Ayer Terap. But later changed to “Gomeh” ( combination of English word “Gold” and local Malay dialect for gold, “Omeh” ) , subsequently “Gemas”

Gemas was the lifeline of Malaya’s railway service. It was, and still is, the changeover for trains from the North, East Coast, and South. Constructed in 1922, Gemas Railway Station had seen its days of glory when trains roar through the rainforest jungles of Malaya, connecting towns, connecting peoples as well……

Today, Gemas Railway Station houses 2 nostalgic 1946 model North British Locomotive Company steam engines, occasionally visited by wanderers, seeking for past memories.

In 2008, Malaysian government commissioned the construction of an electrified double-track connecting Seremban to Gemas. The project scheduled to be completed by 2012. Similar projects connecting Gemas-Johor Bharu, Rawang-Ipoh, & Ipoh-Butterworth, too is in various stages of completion. Together, the new tracks will eventually cut short traveling time to all major towns along the East Coast. Reviving the dying railway service, supposedly !

Bukit Tabur

Bukit Tabur is a hill located in Taman Melawati.. The hill is less than 1000 meter in height, yet easily spotted from MRR2.

Hiking trail starts from Kampung Klang Gates, for about 60-100 minutes to the top.

At several points, the journey can be dangerous, as one need to climb up and down quartz ridges. There is ropes in-situ. Yet, in many occasion, one need more than ropes to prevail.

The reward is priceless !

Top–of-the-world view of the Gombak Forest Reserve, side by side with Klang Gates Dam. On the west is panoramic view of KL. At some lucky days, a picturesque sunrise with clouds below ones feet.

Yet, one needs not to look far for a great view. The rocky ridges, needle–leaves trees, mosses are great sights fit for a king !

这次上茅山，是有备而来！

衔说上得茅山多了，总是越觉得少了些挑战。人总要自我挑战、自我突破，方为人上人。

手电筒，风筝，泡泡枪，椰浆饭，冻巧克力统统塞进背包。凌晨5时出门，6时抵达山脚。哇噻！人山人海。为了避免人潮，虽然咱们已快马加鞭，半跑半走，还是七时到达山顶。

人多毕竟少了清静。众声喧哗中还掺些烟味，扫兴之极。

虽不见日出，但草原下还有云海，还不至于毫无收获。欲放风筝而无风。吹完泡泡，又吃椰浆饭喝冷饮，羡慕煞众登山者。还给人家拍了许多放风筝、吹泡泡的美姿。看来下次可要带西瓜、榴莲了！

First car in Malaya was brought in to Ipoh, Perak by Mr Eu Tong Sen in 1902, Cars in Perak was first registered as “PK” but was replaced with “A” in 1945 after WW2.

Prior to 1937, motor vehicles in Perak and Selangor was under the control of respective state Police ; the Chief Inspector in Negeri Sembilan ; and District Officers in Pahang, respectively. Vehicles in Unfederated Malay States were not regulated then.

The current vehicle license plates is regulated and administered by the Road Transport Department. Each state was assigned with a letter, with ABC 1234 format.

A = Perak

B = Selangor

C = Pahang

D = Kelantan

J = Johor

K = Kedah

M = Melaka

N = Negeri Sembilan

P = Pulau Pinang

R = Perlis

T = Terengganu

W = Wilayah Persekutuan

One may see this as random allocation of letters to car registration of Malaysian states, but I see a pattern in there.

What I see may not be correct, but I am sure it is an interesting story.

From My Eyes

Well, it was a first come first serve basis.

Penang first became a British Colony, then Malacca and Singapore followed. By logic and by right, Penang of course get the ‘P’, Malacca get the ‘M’ and Singapore get the ‘S’.

After the top 3 were settled, then came the 4 Federated Malay States. Negeri Sembilan get the ‘N’. Perak wanted a ‘P’, but it was taken by Penang, so Perak had to go for ‘A’, the first of the alphabet. Selangor too wanted a ‘S’, but

Singapore

get it first, so Selangor had to settle with a ‘B’. Pahang also can’t stripped Penang of her ‘P’, so she get herself a ‘C’.

Lastly, the Unfederated Malay States … Johor was in luck. Nobody owned ‘J’ yet, so she get it without a fight. Terengganu and Kedah too get their ‘T’ and ‘K’ respectively without resistance. Kelantan loss to Kedah maybe because Kedah had an affair with British first. So. Kelantan had to walk away with ‘D’.

Perlis is for ‘P’, but ‘P’ was already taken by Penang. The next of he alphabet was ‘E’. Somehow Perlis decided not to submit to fate. She fought for her love, and gets ‘R’ at the end of the day. Why 'R' ? A mystery forever unanswered.

Well, my story may lacks of concrete evidence, but it does sound logical, right ? At least it’s a good story !

In the Unites States and Canada, a commonly accepted guideline for housing affordability is a housing cost that does not exceed 30% of a household’s gross income. The cost generally includes taxes, insurance and utility costs.

Malaysia

’s Scenario

In Malaysia, people often grudge about expensive houses, yet we see new house built, and sold like hot cakes.

While private sector hardly built double-storey linked house that cost less than RM300k ( with built up area ±2800ft2 ), a medium cost high-rise apartment ( with built up area ±1000ft2 ) easily costs a hefty RM200k.

With maximum sum of loan from bank, one may easily have to re-pay RM1k/month for up to 30 long years !

Government’s Role for Low-Income Group

Government through Jabatan Perumahan Negara ( JPN ), an agency under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, whose only mission is to “ get ready that housing development are enough, comfortable, affordable and save to fulfill the need for low income group of people.”

The low cost houses ranging from single-storey linked house to highrise apartment, supposedly cost between RM25k – RM 42k, are targeted for low-income group with household income ranging from RM750 – RM1.5k.

Such programs usually result in congested housing and undesirable neighborhoods.

Medium-Income Group’s Scenario

Medium-income group takes home an average of gross income of RM5k/month. After deducting all the expenses, there are hardly anything left ! This has yet to include medical expenses, clothing & accessories, entertainment & holidays, and for household with children, schooling expenses.

Considering 10% down payment to purchase a ±RM300k house, one need to fork out RM30k upfront. Assuming all savings goes to that, one still need to save up to 5 years to gather enough money for down payment. This excluding any other fees, renovation or furniture which may cost as much.

( Not forgetting young couples who had just spend a huge chunk of their savings for their wedding, honeymoon etc. Whatever leftover of their savings are hardly sufficient to acquire a dream house ).

Then, to secure a ±RM270k loan from any bank will mean monthly installment of ±RM1.2k for 30 years ( until retirement, that is ). By the time one settle the last installment, total money paid may be doubled due to the accumulative interest rate..

Considering ±RM1.2k monthly installment, one may wander how to squeeze out the money from a gross salary of ±RM5k, without cutting down budget for food, transportation and other basic needs.

Without doubt, a ±RM300k house is beyond a medium-incomer’s reach. In fact, if we do some calculation, if 20% of total monthly income goes to housing, one can only afford a ±RM150k house, which is mostly an apartment with ±1000ft2 built up area.

Suggestions .

++ Implement built-and-sell system..

To buy a house is definitely the most expensive purchase for most people. With the current buy-and-built system, buyers are buying dreams. There are no guarantees that the developers will keep their end of the bargain. If the developers fail to deliver, the owners will end up owing bankers, with no more money to make new purchase, while being blacklisted for unsettled loan.

Built-and-sell system ensure only genuine players with strong monetary background can enter the industry. It is after all, a lucrative business building and selling houses, and everyone wants a piece of it. Besides, it is only fair to sell a finished product, rather than a promise.

++ Control sale price of new house

It is known that a developer net earnings is >100% of total sale, i.e. when a house worth RM300k is sold, developer makes at least RM150k nett.

We can’t blame the demand-and-supply of free market, but considering housing is man’s basic need, thus making it everyone’s right to an affordable housing. When a basic need / basic right are charged exorbitantly, an imbalance of power and economy follows. No man shall be held ransom for his basic need / basic right.

++ Control of loan interest

Interest on housing loan is a huge BLACK HOLE. Interests are calculated based on balance principle on fixed period basis. Installments paid are mostly for paying the interest instead of the principle. A rough calculation indicates that total installment paid over loan period = double the principle loaned. Meaning that, a loan of RM100k for 30 years shall end up with repayment of RM200k.

Obviously, the interest is exorbitant ! Does the proposed Price Control & Profiteering Bill 2010 includes houses ? Or only for RM1 glass of water ?

++ 1 person 1 house

Many consider buying a house as an investment. Buy and sell, and make money out of it. This will of course resulted in increase of price of house, over every transaction, making owning a house more difficult for others.

Some will buy house to collect rental. This may seems like providing affordable housing by renting out rooms for certain individual, but it is an indication of unfair housing and economical dominancy.

As a basic right, every man has the right to own a house of his own. But when a man owns more than 1 house, he deprives another man’s right to own a house.

++ Government control vs free market

Property, as to any other industries, deserves a free market to thrive. Yet, there are no absolute freedom. Even in the property industry, a form of control is needed.

Flats, apartments and terrace houses are low and medium cost housings, thus should be regulated by the state, in order to protect the people. Housing is no a supply-and-demand issue anymore, it’s a matter of basic need.

Meanwhile, high end properties such as bungalows, and condominiums can be allowed to be traded freely. It is after all luxurious properties.

Trade, is the voluntary, often asymmetric, exchange of goods, services, or money. Trade exists for man due to specialization and division of labuor. The origin of trade was barter, the direct exchange of goods and services. Modern traders use a medium of exchange, i.e. money, which makes buying and selling simplified.

Trading is so common and essential in our daily lives, that some consider it human’s basic rights. Therefore, it is not surprising that laws are designed to protect fair competition and free flow of truthful information in the marketplace.

Buy, is to acquire the possession of, or the right to, a commodity or services, by paying or promising to pay an equivalent in money ; Sell, is to transfer goods to, or service for another in exchange of money.

A buy-sell transaction should be on goodwill basis, voluntary, fair and truthful. Any attempt otherwise are to be considered breaching the essence of trading, a criminal act maybe.

Almost anything can be trade, literary anything under the sun, even above it.

Yet, everyday we see the oppression that was taking place under the sun : unfair trade !

A toll road supposed to be a road built for drivers to have a safe and uninterrupted access. In other word, drivers pay not only for the access of the road, but also the convenience and safety of the access. No one with a sane mind would pay for an inconvenience and dangerous route !

I believe most Malaysian would agree with me that paying to be jammed is ridiculous. But it is nothing new : motorist jammed-queue to pay the toll, then to be jammed after paying toll. This is obviously not fair for the motorist ( consumer, a.k.a. the rakyat ), to pay for something they didn’t get ( the convenience and safe access ) !

Since nothing is being done ( successfully ) to ease the traffic, the toll operators should have not collecting any payment for using the jammed highways ! To be fair, tolls should only be collected during eased traffic ( when the toll operatiors able to deliver their service/product ).

Otherwise, our toll operators are nothing more than a law-protected highwayman. And our government who allows this unfairness to happen, is nothing more than BIG Napoleon themselves.

On the winding road en-route to Sg. Chiling, one shall pass by Sg. Selangor Dam which holds some 235 million m³ of water. It is maintained by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd ( SPLASH ). SPLASH is the concessionaire appointed by the ( BN-controlled ) Selangor state government in January 2000 to build, operate and maintain the Sungai Selangor Water Supply Scheme Phase 3 ( SSP#3 )

SPLASH sells the water in bulk ( how much? ) to SYABAS, a water supply distributor appointed by Selangor state government. SPLASH also operate Sg Tinggi Dam, which located at the riverheads of Sg Buluh, which holds a 122.5 million m³ of fresh water.

Shareholders of SPLASH comprise Gamuda Berhad ( who also owns KESAS, LDP, Sprint Highway which the Government keeps compensating huge amount of money for the loses occurred collecting tolls; and the not-so-smart SMART tunnel )( 40% ), the mysterious Sweet Water Alliance ( 30% ) and the Selangor Government’s investment arm Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad .

SPLASH supposely works closely with the Selangor Water Management Authority ( LUAS ) and other relevant government agencies in ensuring sustainability of Sg. Selangor ( part of which the dying firefly colonies in Kuala Selangor ).

Gunung Datuk locates in Kg Batang Nyamor, Gadung of the Rembau district of Negeri Sembilan state. It is within the vicinity of Gunung Tampin Forest Reserve, of which part of the forest reserve is open to public for recreational purpose, known as Hutan Lipur Gunung Datuk.

The summit reaches 2,900 feet ( about 883 meter ) above sea level. But how high is it from the base? Not a clue ! It is however the minimum for a mountain in general appellation, is 1000 feet or 300m over base. So, is it a mountain or mere a hill ?

Journey up the mountain takes about 2 hours. We stop numerous times. It was really steep. Journey down takes about 110 minutes. Can’t move very fast as one might hurt his knee or leg muscles.

It was reported that the summit of the mountain was once used by Dato Perpatih Nan Sebatang to gather Ketua-ketua Adat to announce the title and name of future Dato Lembaga in 1372. What a weird place for such an occasion.

往往许多人在抉择伴侣时，容易东想西想，不知所措，就是因为害怕一时做错决定，看错人，造成终生的遗憾。

诺贝尔文学奖得主萧伯纳说："此时此刻在地球上，约有两万个人适合当你的人生伴侣，就看你先遇到哪一个，如果在第二个理想伴侣出现之前，你已经跟前一个人发展出相知相惜、互相信赖的深层关系，那后者就会变成你的好朋友，但是若你跟前一个人没有培养出深层关系，感情就容易动摇、变心，直到你与这些理想伴侣候选人的其中一位拥有稳固的深情，才是幸福的开始，漂泊的结束。

爱上一个人不需要靠努力，只需要靠"际遇"，是上天的安排，但是"持续地爱一个人"就要靠"努力"，在爱情的经营中，顺畅运转的要素就是沟通、体谅、包容与自制 (面临诱惑有所自制)。有许多人总是被"际遇"所迷惑与苦恼，意念不停、欲念不断、争逐不散，而忘了培养经营感情的能力才是幸福的关键。
