1969

- Sino-Malay race riots in KL led to a declaration of a state of emergency and suspension of Parliament. Officially, 196 people were killed between May 13 and July 1, as a result of the riots, although journalists and other observers stated over 2,000.

- The May13 incident led to the expulsion of Mahathir Mohamad from UMNO on 12 July, and propelled him to write The Malay Dilemma, in which he posited a solution to Malaysia’s racial tensions based on aiding the Malays economically through an affirmative action programme.

- Tunku Abdul Rahman resigned as Prime Minister, succeeded by Tun Razak.

- Rukunegara, the de facto Malaysian pledge of allegiance, was introduced on August 31, 1970.

- The new perceived ‘Malay-ultra’ dominated government swiftly move to placate Malays with the New Economic Policy ( NEP ) in 1971.

2009

- Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar filed application to set aside a stay of execution order on the High Court decision declaring him the Menteri Besar of Perak.

- "A fresh state election is only one of the options to resolve the Perak political crisis and not something that has to happen", said Datuk Seri Najib Rajak. The PM also said it was up to the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan to decide whether a fresh election should be held for Perak.. However, shall there be a fresh election, “BN was not afraid of facing any eventuality, including a fresh state election, if that was the decision”, and “We are ready to face the people”

- The High Court had on 11 May, ruled that Nizar is the rightful MB after finding that the post could only be deemed vacant through a vote of no-confidence in the state assembly. But Zambry filed an appeal against the decision in the Court of Appeal, allowing him to remain as MB while waiting for decision on the appeal case.

- Politics in Perak turned into an award-winning-drama since 4 PR’s assemblyman gone missing and reappeared on Feb 4, with them the then Deputy PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak, announced their support for BN. With that, both BN and PR have 28 assemblymen each, with 3 pro-BN Independents in the 59-seat State Assembly.

- Sultan Azlan Shah decided not to grant consent to the PR’s request to dissolve the State Assembly, instead ordered Nizar to step down. Nizar defied the order and insisted he is still the legal MB.

- Zambry of BN with the support of Sultan of Perak sworn in as MB, forcing Nizar into exile.

- PR retaliated. The House Rights and Privileges Committee headed by Assembly Speaker Sivakumar suspended and barred Zambry and his 6 Excos for 18 months and 12 months respectively.

- Barred entry to the Assembly by the Police and State Secretary, 27 PR’s assemblymen gathered under a raintree, under doctrine of necessity, approved 3 motions : support Nizar as MB ; call for the dissolution of the Assembly ; and to affirm the suspension of Zambry. The quorum to hold the Assembly is one quarter of the full assembly of 59, which is 15.

Things I Loved in Sabah

1. Flora

A walk in the Sunday’s Tamu is an eye-opening adventure!
A guided tour in Kinabalu Park too is something not-to-be-missed!
A stop by the stalls en-route to Mt. Kinabalu or Tambunan or Tenom or Tuaran or anywhere may spur unexpected surprises!
A more systematic collection of floras in Tenom Agricultural Park will crazed any plant enthusiasts.
A visit to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park’s Botanical Garden may be just enough for a brief insight.
Still, a trained eye will spot an exotic beauty even at unexpected place !

( forgive me for paying more attention to the floras of Sabah. )


2. Fauna

A visit to Sabah is certainly incomplete without meeting the famous Orang Utans. However, going all the way to Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary is a bit too far away. Alternatively, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, which is about 30minutes drive from KK is an excellence choice.

As we were in a hurry to return the rented car, we visited only the Borneo Pygmy Elephants and the Proboscis Monkeys.

Not to be missed at the Wildlife Park is the animal show at 11am. It is indeed entertaining as well informative.

3. Mt Kinabalu

I woke up in a chilled morning after a night stay at David’s B&B in Kundasang, overseeing the magnificent Mt. Kinabalu. I didn’t know it is the world-known Mt. Kinabalu at first….. The view was just breath-taking, and I just kept snapping the shuttle button.

It was in the evening as we drove deeper into the mountain range. The legendary Kinabalu shy herself in the clouds, I couldn’t recognize her only until the following morning when the sky was clear, briefly revealing her true beauty.

The journey from KK to Kundasang was breath-taking itself. The road are hilly and winding, yet offered scenic view and cool refreshing air!


4. Island Beaches

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is just an easy 10-20minutes speed boat ride from Jesselton Jetty of KK. The marine park comprising a cluster of scenic islands of Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug.

I loved the fact that the islands are so near to the mainland. What an easy get-away !

The boat’s fare was reasonably ‘expensive’, plus RM3 entrance fee to the Park. Yet, once set foot on the sandy beach, it was worth the money.

Marine lives are not impressing, unfortunately. Water sports are too exorbitantly beyond of my budget. I, however enjoyed a lazy stroll down the beach, shooting pictures, admiring the floras and faunas, reading a book maybe and for sure a nap on the beach !


5. Shaded walkways

Streets in KK are quite pedestrian-friendly. Most of the walkways and medians are wide enough for planting a nice shady tree, thus making a stroll down the road in a 37°C an enjoyable one !

There is even a long pedestrian bridge connecting all the way from Post Office to Pasar Kraftangan, with exit-bridge to all adjacent buildings.

Anyway, I will still apply a generous portion of sun block ……



6 Close-to-Town Airport

Without doubt KK International Airport can’t beat KLIA in terms of capacity or architecture beauty, but it is certain the nearest airport to the city I’ve ever seen.

A 15 minutes taxi ride from heart of KK cost about RM20! Incredibly near and relatively cheaper too!

Skywalker

A walk in the canopy of the rainforest is certainly an unforgettable experience !

a magical place hidden between Heaven and Earth, canopy of the rainforest is so near to the Heaven, that the Wonders of Heaven sprinkles in the air ; yet near to the Earth, that even mortals can once in a millionth, skywalk in it.

As I was 17 meter up in the air, trying to overcome the obstacles, constantly fearing for falling down, despite the carabineers were strongly clinked to the cable. I was so focused to the obstacles that I missed most of the wonderful sights.

“ did the Israelites missed the magnificent sight while crossing the Red Sea, as they were too afraid and so hurriedly fleeing from the Pharaoh’s wrath ? even with God’s pillar of fire and cloud protecting them from behind ? ” I wonder.

By the time I learned that I should let the cable carry my weight, instead of trying to depend on my own strength, I was already halfway through.

Let go ! Hold on too hard on the cable or carabineers and we might hurt ourselves instead.
